As aviation faces increasing climate challenges, understanding how changing weather patterns impact flight safety and airport operations has never been more urgent. Within this context, the ALBATROS consortium held its Demo 12 on 3 October 2025 — a hybrid event hosted by NLR Amsterdam — bringing together experts from across the aviation sector, including airports, airlines, regulators, and researchers.
A total of 51 participants (38 online + 13 in person) joined the session to explore the latest findings on climate-related safety risks and the tools being developed within ALBATROS to support data-driven risk management at European airports.
Exploring Climate Change Risks at Airports
The team presented analyses of weather-related risks across Europe’s airports. Discussions focused on how temperature extremes, heavy precipitation, and strong winds may affect operational safety and long-term resilience.
Participants also observed simulation techniques that apply climate projections to assess vulnerabilities at individual airports. A new approach to climate hazard risk assessment was introduced, helping airports and authorities quantify potential impacts on daily operations.
The session encouraged interaction, with participants sharing operational experiences and perspectives on how climate change may reshape airport safety management.
Demo 12 Within the ALBATROS Validation Framework
ALBATROS is running 15 demonstrations across Europe to test and refine safety, resilience, and decision-support solutions in real operational contexts. These use four methodologies: workshops, airport exercises, real-time simulations, and laboratory testing.
Demo 12 focused on climate resilience, providing actionable insights on how airports can anticipate and mitigate weather-related safety risks in the coming decades.
