In-flight turbulence remains a significant operational hazard and one of the leading causes of weather-related incidents in commercial aviation. To address this ongoing challenge, the ALBATROS consortium partnered with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to investigate turbulence patterns using large-scale data analytics.

The outcomes of this directed safety study were presented during a joint public webinar on 29 September 2026.

The session highlighted how the EASA Data4Safety (D4S)  platform is utilized to process millions of flight recordings, translating raw operational data into actionable safety intelligence. Technical experts and researchers detailed several core aspects during the event:

  • the data-driven methodology used to model and classify turbulence encounters  based on actual flight parameters;

  • how predictive algorithms are being refined through machine learning applied to historical meteorological and flight data;

  • practical applications designed to enhance risk mitigation and operational decision-making  for both flight crews and airline operation centers.

If you are interested in the technical developments discussed during the session, the complete video recording of the event is available for consultation below.
