Project Description

What would happen to commercial aviation if the strongest solar storm in history occurred today?

The event of 774 AD is the most intense ever identified. In this study, our partners at the University of Oulu and GFZ Potsdam reconstructed that ancient radiation environment to calculate potential doses at modern flight altitudes.

By scaling historical data and modeling the Earth’s past magnetic field, they established a scientifically grounded “worst-case scenario.”

For ALBATROS, defining these upper limits is essential to stress-test our radiation models and ensure safety protocols can handle extreme outliers.
